The Paruparo Series
In mid-2023, I started this butterfly-themed series of collages of handcut original prints of mine. Although a childhood -- and perhaps, very common -- concept of collaging is cutting up glossy magazine pages and pasting these together to make compositions, I endeavored to use my own two-dimensional works instead. I specifically cut my original prints: some are monotypes; others were created by rubbercut, collograph and drypoint techniques. This decision to use my original prints for collaging is partly in defiant response to generative AI tools' culling and use of images of various artists' works.
The first of the series is my contribution to the "SPACE/PLACE" exhibit of the Association of Pinoyprintmakers at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Tanghalang Ignacio Gimenez.
I continued to expand the series, with succeeding works exhibited at the MARS Center for Printmaking at the Philippine Women's University, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts gallery in Intramuros, and the Ayala Museum in Makati City..
